Welcome back to Multicore. This is Instruction Set for the week of Friday, November 3rd.

Yet another long weekend here in Japan. Friday was Culture Day, which I observed by checking out Resident Evil Village on the iPhone 15 Pro of Multicore buddy and fellow Substacker Alex Aniel. You can read Alex’s thoughts here; I agree with him that it’s technically impressive but perhaps not all that practical. The iPhone really does get toasty.

Still, I don’t think Apple or Capcom expect many people to finish the whole game on their phone. The platform play is what’s most interesting to me: the Resident Evil 4 remake will work across iPhone, iPad, and Mac with a single purchase. It’s still going to be a tough sell to get developers on board, but particularly in light of this week’s GPU-heavy M3 Mac event, I can see a world where I might choose to buy a game on Mac because of iPhone cross-compatibility.

I wrote about Apple’s event in passing earlier this week as part of a broader look at ARM-based PCs. Let’s start with a few more nuggets from the event that are worth calling out.
