Reviewing Mark Zuckerberg's Vision Pro review
'I don't just think that Quest is the better value — I think the Quest is the better product, period.'
Today Mark Zuckerberg uploaded an unusual video to Instagram in which he detailed his experience with the Apple Vision Pro. The gist is that he isn’t worried in the slightest because he believes the Meta Quest 3 is a better product even though it’s much cheaper ($500 vs $3,500).
You can watch the video below, but it’s mostly just Zuck on his couch filmed through Quest 3 cameras. I’ve transcribed the whole thing and broken it up into chunks.
Almost everything he says comes with huge caveats and obvious “well actually”s. It’s unlikely to age well unless the Vision Pro turns out to be a total flop, which I don’t expect.
But I find this video quite compelling. Zuckerberg is both extremely smart and an expert in the field; he clearly knows all about those caveats and wants to make the case regardless. I really think he believes that the Quest 3 is better than the Vision Pro right now. And in a lot of ways, I think he has a point.
Alright guys, so I finally tried Apple's Vision Pro. And you know, I have to say that before this, I expected that Quest would be the better value for most people since it's really good and it's like seven times less expensive. But after using it I don't just think that Quest is the better value — I think the Quest is the better product, period.
The flex here is not just stating that the Quest is outright better. It’s that Mark Zuckerberg, multi-billionaire CEO of the biggest player in VR headsets, only just got around to trying Apple’s take on a VR headset.
You know, the different companies made different design decisions for the headsets, they have different strengths, but overall Quest is better for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for.
By “things that people use mixed reality for”, he’s talking about things that were largely defined and popularised by Meta itself based on the capabilities of its own hardware. Zuckerberg is saying it doesn’t yet matter that Apple is proposing something else.
Now, you could say that that’s like BlackBerry’s CEOs saying that the BlackBerry is better than the iPhone for things that people use BlackBerrys for in 2007.
