Welcome back to Multicore. This is Instruction Set for the week of Monday, December 11th.
As a programming note, this will be the last Instruction Set of 2023. I’m heading to Europe at the weekend for various holiday festivities and don’t plan on tracking the likely non-existent news too closely. I will, however, be keeping Multicore rolling with a bunch of year-end material.
Normal service will resume in early January, when we’ll all have to start thinking about CES.
Google announced a huge feature update for the Pixel 8 Pro. It’s rolling out now, though I haven’t yet received it myself. Much of the update centres around machine learning features, including two powered by Gemini Nano, the lightest-weight version of Google’s new Gemini AI model.
The Gemini Nano features include AI-generated summaries of transcriptions in the Pixel’s best-in-class voice recorder app. This runs on the Tensor G3 processor without the need for an internet connection. Gemini Nano will also be able to generate smart replies from Gboard, though right now it’s a developer preview that only works with Whatsapp.
